Jamie in the Spotlight!
Meet Jamie – one of the few (and much-appreciated!) males in our current yard team. Easy-going by nature and always eager to learn, Jamie brings a great energy to the stables. With his sights set on becoming a vet, he’s combining hands-on experience with his studies, making him a valued part of our team.
What led you to start your job at MC Equestrian?
I volunteered for a couple months before starting my employment at MC in July of 2024 and really enjoyed it. I wanted to pursue veterinary medicine, and needed the work experience for my university application. I didn’t initially know that I would keep the job, but I’m glad it’s taken me where it has!
Do you have a favourite horse at work, or one with a cheeky personality that always makes you laugh?
Foxy takes the cake for the cheekiest (and my favourite) horse at work. I never knew it was possible to describe a horse as an “escape artist” but Foxy has proven otherwise – so much so that he is now forbidden from being left in the front stables unattended (for those of you who may not have seen Foxy’s unique ability to open stable doors with his mouth - head over to our Instagram reels).
Apart from his stealthy talent, Foxy is always glad to see me on early Saturday mornings, and I’ve grown quite fond of him (even if he is a little mischief!)
What does your typical day at MC Equestrian involve?
At work, a typical Saturday morning shift for me involves an early wake-up to feed the horses. Moving some horses around between our two paddock locations, and of course the not-so-glamourous yard cleaning! I also help out at holiday camps and with groups when needed. Wherever possible I lend a hand - I’m sure I’ve clocked up a lifetime’s worth of weed whacking and hose untangling to keep our paddocks safe for our horses!
Tell us what you like best about working for MC Equestrian Riding School?
I really enjoy my time at MC, l have a special place in my heart for all the horses here. Whether it’s King’s uncanny gift for injuring himself, or Buzz’s tendency to climb into places he can’t get himself out of, all the horses at MC are personable and charismatic and I love being around them.
Prior to working at MC, I had exactly zero experience around horses or equestrian sports in general. Working at MC Equestrian has opened me up to a whole new equesrian world and taught me so much about animal care - in particular horses! I also appreciate the routine of the work – it’s a great distraction from highschool!
Tell us about a funny horse moment?
I remember arriving at our paddocks, to find cheeky Buzz had navigated himself between the fences and into the smallest little enclosure on the entire property. How he got into the enclosure – I’ll never know – but I’m certain he did it on purpose to make me spend the next hour dismantling the fence to let him out.
What is your favourite horse quote?
I don’t really have a favourite horse quote, but I do remember something Dee once said to me – “There is no point in having a fight with a horse, they don’t remember who won or lost, the only remember the fight!” So, I keep this in mind when dealing with some of the cheekier horse antics.
