Lucy in the Spotlight!

The always effervescent Lucy joined the MCEQ team at the beginning of 2024. Quickly becoming one of our much-loved team members who brings her bubbly personality, early childhood expertise, and deep love of horses to everything she does at MC Equestrian.

What led you to start your job at MC Equestrian?

Horses have always been a big part of my life. Growing up in the south of England, it was almost unusual not to ride as a child. I had my first pony, Harry, by the age of 11, and I continued riding horses right up until I moved to Australia in 2009.

I took a break whilst raising my family, then once my children were older and it was time for me to return to work, I knew I needed a job that also fed my passion. My studies in England qualified me as an early childhood educator and I have been able to transition these skills on to teaching riding and horsemanship. Having horses with children in my classroom is a lot more rewarding!

What does your typical day at MC Equestrian involve?

No two days are exactly the same, which is one of the best parts of the job. I'm responsible for keeping the horses’ living spaces clean and tidy, preparing their feeds, assisting with horse movements, general maintenance, lots of cleaning and sorting and teaching weekly preschool lessons. During the holidays I assist with Holiday camps which are amazing fun and enjoyed by all, me especially.!

Do you have a favourite horse at work, or one with a cheeky personality that always makes you laugh?

Buzz is definitely the cheekiest pony, but gets away with it because he is so darn cute and he knows it. As for my favourite, it’s hard to choose because I love them all! I do have a soft spot for Marvin. I adore his slightly grumpy old-man attitude… even though he’s not actually that old!

Tell us what you like best about working for MC Equestrian Riding School?

I love being around the horses and getting my hands dirty - literally! Working outdoors in the fresh air is such a bonus (except maybe on rainy days, I’m not a fan of mud!). But overall, it's amazing. I feel lucky to be part of such a passionate and dedicated team, and it’s rewarding to help bring the magic of MC Equestrian to life.

We have the most amazing clients who sometimes feel abit like family. I love watching them progress and watching the highs and lows of their riding journeys on our beautiful horses and providing words of encouragement. Everyday at MC is so fulfilling in so many ways. I always leave on a high.

Tell us about your horse?

For the last 3 years I have been fortunate to lease a gorgeous Clydie cross named Chief. He’s 10 years old and lives just up the road from work, so I visit him most days. We enjoy riding in the arena and trail riding. He’s a gentle giant with a lovely personality. He is a quirky boy that teaches me new things all the time. With horses you never stop learning.

Tell us about one of your memorable horse experiences?

I lived in Singapore for five years and volunteered with Riding for the Disabled. It was incredibly rewarding, both for me as a horse lover and for the joy it brought to the clients. Watching their faces light up during their sessions was truly special.

Do you have any funny horse moments you recall?

‘Accidentally’ swimming in the river. I took my horse in for a paddle and she had other ideas and decided to roll. We both got very wet!

What is your favourite horse quote?

I have two! Both by Winston Churchill:
"There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man."
"No hour of life is wasted that is spent in the saddle."
